FORT CARSON, Colo.—The Defense Department says a Fort Carson soldier died after a vehicle accident in Iraq.
The military said Wednesday that Spc. Darrell L. Fernandez died Saturday in Kirkuk.
The 25-year-old Fernandez, a tank mechanic, was from Truth or Consequences, N.M.
He was assigned to Fort Carson’s 1st Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
Fernandez graduated from Hot Springs High School in Truth or Consequences in 2002, and joined the Army soon after. He served in Iraq from March 2005 to February 2006 and returned for a second tour in September.
Fernandez received the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and other awards.
The accident is under investigation.
