VAIL, Colo.—Vail police investigated a higher number of ski and snowboard thefts last year than the recent average.

Between 2002 and 2007, police dealt with an average of about 60 ski and snowboard thefts a year. Last year the department reported 83 thefts. Police say they expect a high number of thefts in 2009 too.

Police say the increase could be attributed to deviant minds, people not securing their equipment, and the horrific economy.

Vail police say some stolen equipment has been recovered after being found on Craigslist or eBay.
