A taxi driver was seriously injured early this morning when a speeding car broadsided his vehicle after running a red light at Speer Boulevard and Champa Street.

The accident happened at about 1:20 a.m. as the taxi was traveling north on Speer, Denver police spokeswoman Sharon Avendano said.

According to 9News, witnesses told police a black Dodge Neon sped through downtown at up to 70 mph before running the red light and hitting the Fiesta Cab Co. car.

The witnesses said the suspect tried to run away, but a woman who saw what happened held him down until police arrived. The Dodge was stolen, according to 9News.

Both the suspect and the taxi driver were taken to the hospital. Police have not released their names.
