FRUITA—An arrest affidavit indicates a Fruita man arrested after a drunken-driving crash that killed his friend told police he drank about six cans of beer before going to a bar—where he drank five shots of alcohol in about 30 minutes.

Twenty-one-year-old Jesse O. Reed appeared in Mesa County Court Tuesday on charges of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Reed was arrested after the SUV he was driving hit a light pole at an intersection at about 2 a.m. Sunday, ejecting 23-year-old John Fulmer IV. Grand Junction police say Fulmer was already dead when they arrived.

Reed’s attorney, David Eisner, requested a low bond because Reed had been an excellent student in high school.

A Mesa County judge set Reed’s bond at $15,000.
