DENVER—A House committee has approved two bills that would help local governments prepare for wildfire season.

One bill would help local governments get ready for wildfires so they can respond effectively and efficiently in emergency situations.

A second bill would regulate the management, protection and use of Colorado’s forests to deal with bark beetle deforestation and the resulting increased risk of forest fires.

Democratic Rep. Christine Scanlan of Dillon says having plans and guidelines established before firefighters hit the ground will help save lives and property.

The bills were approved Wednesday by the House Agriculture, Livestock & Natural Resources Committee. Both measures now go to the appropriations committee to determine the cost.
