MILLINGTON, Tenn.—Shaeffer Hall was downright stingy in Kansas’ season opener.
The junior left-hander tossed the fifth individual no-hitter in Jayhawks history, striking out seven in a 5-0 victory over Air Force in the Service Academy Classic at USA Stadium on Friday.
Hall, from Lee’s Summit, Mo., walked the first batter and then retired 17 straight before another walk in the sixth. He finished with three walks, becoming the first Jayhawks pitcher to throw a no-hitter since David Hicks against Northwest Missouri State in 1980.
Five Kansas pitchers combined to shut down Texas Southern on Feb. 1, 2004, in the Jayhawks’ most recent no-hitter.
Hall walked Nathan Carter for the third time to lead off the ninth, but got K.J. Randhawa to ground into a double play before striking out pinch-hitter Ben Ausben to seal the no-hitter.
