Twelve puppies, their mom and their owners escaped a house fire in Fort Collins on Tuesday.

First-responders were called about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to a single-family home at 2025 N. College Ave., the Poudre Fire Authority said in an incident report released today.

When fire crews and a Larimer County sheriff’s deputy arrived, there was smoke, but the residents, a mother dog and 10 of her puppies had already gotten out.

The deputy grabbed one puppy left near the door, but smoke kept him from getting the last puppy out.

The one-story, wood-frame building had fire coming out a back window. Fire crews put out the flames and rescued the last of the 12 puppies.

Four engines and two ladder trucks were on the scene with 25 personnel.

Half of the home was severely damaged. The Red Cross is assisting the residents.

Authorities determined the fire started with a candle left unattended in a bedroom.

Fire officials warned people to “never leave burning candles unattended.”
