DENVER—A woman originally accused of identity theft has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after falsely claiming in Denver District Court that she had cancer.

Forty-four-year-old Terrie Mauldin of Denver was at a sentencing hearing last year on the ID theft charge when she said she had ovarian cancer.

District attorney’s spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough says Mauldin produced false documents to convince the court she was ill, and her claim delayed her sentencing.

Kimbrough says her office investigated and found Mauldin’s claim to be false.

On Friday, Mauldin was sentenced to two 12-year terms to be served at the same time: one for the ID theft charge and another for falsely representing herself to the court. Both charges are felonies.

Prosecutors say the ID theft charge stems from a scam that involved stealing money from a small business owner and his investors.
