BEIJING — The strength of last year’s massive earthquake in southwestern China was the main reason so many schools collapsed, an official said Sunday, ignoring claims that shoddy construction was to blame.

The 7.9-magnitude temblor in May collapsed 7,000 classrooms, while other nearby buildings stood. Wei Hong, executive vice governor of Sichuan, said the total number of schoolchildren killed had not yet been calculated.
