A man who falsely claimed to be an accountant and tax lawyer has been indicted by the state grand jury for theft, fraudulent tax preparation and securities fraud.
According to the indictment, Terry Paul Dorman began his ruse in the fall of 2005 with the alleged goal of opening a restaurant in Lone Tree.
Posing as a lawyer and tax accountant, Dorman was able to obtain access to highly confidential information from the people he allegedly duped, including their names, birth dates, drivers’ licenses and Social Security numbers.
With that information, Dorman is accused of fraudulently opening lines of credit with various financial institutions and also entering a fraudulent leasing agreement.
The grand jury also said Dorman improperly prepared individual income taxes and then tried to convince his clientele their refunds should be invested in his company.
Dorman, 62, is also accused of securities fraud by misrepresenting his education, training and experience and the amount of capital his company possessed to investors in his restaurant.
According to the indictment, Dorman owned or managed several businesses, including Slices Investment Group, Grab-N-Joe, Terry’s Simply Fresh Gourmet and Crowfoot Valley Coffee.
The indictment says that Dorman failed to pay Colorado sales tax and wage withholding for Terry’s Simply Fresh Gourmet and Grab-N-Joe and filing false returns for Crowfoot Valley Coffee.
Among the people Dorman is accused of bilking include his girlfriend.
The grand jury said he used his girlfriend’s credit card at Home Depot to purchase construction items for his planned restaurant.
She confronted him about the misuse of the credit card, but he continued to use it, running up thousands of dollars using her credit card number at Home Depot.
The grand jury said that Dorman told his girlfriend he had convinced people at Home Depot he was authorized to use her credit card number.
He is charged with both theft and identity theft in connection with his alleged scamming of his girlfriend.
