DENVER—Longtime Rocky Mountain News reporter James Meadow has died of his injuries following a Friday bicycle accident at Chatfield State Park. He was 59.

Meadow died Sunday after his condition “deteriorated rapidly,” family members said in a statement.

He had been unconscious at Swedish Medical Center, where he was airlifted after the accident with broken bones, a collapsed lung and other injuries. Meadow’s daughter-in-law Kenna Meadow said the wreck happened after Meadow lost control of his bike on hill.

Colleagues at the News, which printed its final edition last month, set up a Facebook page filled with hundreds of remembrances. It illustrates how many people cared about Meadow, said his wife, Julie Meadow. But, she added, there are “not enough words to describe how the whole world felt about him.”

Meadow also is survived by his daughter, Myranda, son, Matt, and two stepsons, Tyler and Kyle Gunkel. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Meadow was collaborating with photographer John Fielder on a book about Colorado ranchers that is in the final stages, Kenna Meadow said.
