Kroger Co., the Cincinnati- based parent of King Soopers and City Markets, said Tuesday its profits rose 8 percent as shoppers increasingly bypassed restaurants, going to the grocery more often and loading their carts with store brands at record rates.

Kroger reported that net income for the quarter rose to $349.2 million, or 53 cents per share, from $322.9 million, or 48 cents per share, the previous year. Total sales gained slightly to $17.26 billion.
