MONTROSE, Colo.—A plea deal could be in the works for a 14-year-old boy accused of slashing the throat of a Montrose High School student.

Attorney Harvey Palefsky said Wednesday he has received an offer and is reviewing it but needs more time to discuss it with his client, Michael Yates.

Yates is charged as an adult with attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault. He is accused of walking into the school Nov. 11 and cutting the throat of 17-year-old Mallory Haulman as she entered the building. Haulman required surgery but has returned to class.

The arrest affidavit says Yates told officers voices in his head told him to hurt someone.

He’ll return to court March 25.

Another 14-year-old charged in the case, Andrew Brown, also is due in court March 25. He is charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
