COMMERCE CITY, Colo.—Authorities say one man is dead and another wounded after the two were shot by Commerce City police officers following a car chase that started with a robbery on a residential street.

Both men were in their late teens or early 20s. Their names were not released.

Christina Gomez says her husband, Eduardo, was driving home when a car hit his vehicle just before 4 p.m. Thursday. She says he got out of his vehicle and was confronted by two men with guns who demanded his wallet and some cell phones in his vehicle.

Lt. Chuck Saunier says two officers in an unmarked vehicle responded to the scene after someone called 911, and a car chase ensured. It ended at the intersection of East 120th Avenue and Chambers Road after the suspects jumped a curb, ran over a street sign and lost a wheel.

Saunier says the suspects fled on foot and tried to grab another car, but the officers followed and gunfire erupted.

Both suspects were wounded, and one later died at a hospital, The Denver Post reported on its Web site. The extent of the other man’s injuries was unclear.

The incident led police to close 120th Avenue from Buckley Road west to Sable Road. Chambers Road also was closed in the area through rush hour.

The shooting in under investigation by the Adams County sheriff’s office and other agencies.
