LINCOLN, Neb.—About 75 Nebraska state government employees got a scare when white powder was found in an envelope on their floor at a state office building in Lincoln.

But a Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department spokeswoman says tests showed the substance was not harmful.

It was discovered around 8:30 a.m. Monday when someone opened a letter on the third floor of the state building in downtown Lincoln.

The Nebraska State Patrol said in a news release that the powder appeared to be a tacky substance, consistent with material often used to correct typed or written correspondence. Officials contacted the sender and have determined it was not meant as a hoax.

State employees were moved from the south to north side of the floor while the substance was tested.
