GREELEY, Colo.—Federal officials say they’ll go ahead with prescribed burn on northeast Colorado grasslands if conditions are right, despite a request by the Weld County commissioners to delay because of fire danger.
The U.S. Forest Service plans to burn 3,000 acres on the Pawnee National Grassland this week to improve wildlife habitat and forage and reduce dry brush that could fuel a wildfire.
The county commissioners passed a resolution Monday asking the Forest Service to postpone or cancel the burn, citing dry conditions.
Forest Service spokesman John Bustos says agency officials take the commissioners’ concerns seriously but believe the grass and soil have enough moisture to make a prescribed burn manageable.
