Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez has faced baseball’s toughest pitchers. But Wednesday in Gilbert, Ariz., Ramirez was swinging at googlies and grubbers instead of split-finger fastballs in his debut as a cricket batsman. Under the tutelage of Australian pro Shaun Marsh, Ramirez swung and missed at his first pitch, then lined the second one past the bowler’s ear. On the third delivery, Ramirez let the ball hit the wicket, which would have been an out in an actual game. “That’s an out?” Ramirez said. “Give me one more chance.” A few minutes later, bowler Souvir Bhuta fired a ball that bounded behind Ramirez, who danced out of the way. “Am I allowed to charge the mound?” Ramirez said.
