A 7-year-old girl in Colorado Springs escaped an abduction attempt Sunday by running to safety, police said.

The incident happened at about 6 p.m. in the 4500 block of Melville Drive, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department blotter.

The girl was walking a dog near a relative’s home when a man driving a red, older-model car tried to coax her into the vehicle, police said.

The child ignored the man and ran; the car followed her for a short distance before driving off.

The suspect is described as a white man between 45 and 60, with gray hair. He was wearing a white shirt and blue pants, police said. The suspect was possibly wearing earrings in the upper part of each ear.

The older, red car probably was a four-door, police said.
