Army Sgt. Daniel Schaefer was reunited Monday night at Denver International Airport with a friend coming all the way from Iraq — a friend he helped save.
While on patrol, he helped rescue a 2-month-old pup that was being beaten by teenagers.
Because of the dog’s injuries, the soldiers considered naming him Scarface, then settled on Pacino.
After he left Iraq in February, other soldiers agreed to care for the dog until it could be sent to him in Colorado Springs. Now, thanks to an SPCA International program called Operation Baghdad Pups, Schaefer and Pacino are together.
“I honestly didn’t think it would ever happen,” Schaefer said.
“After two tours, just bringing a dog home, it’s kind of a way of taking home something good from that country.” Bazi Kanani, 9News
