PHOENIX—A Mexican official in Arizona says Americans shouldn’t be afraid to travel to Mexico, despite reports of escalating violence in his government’s war on drug cartels.

Carlos Flores Vizcarra, Mexican consul general for Phoenix, says American college students who recently spent their spring break at Mexico’s beach resorts didn’t become victims of violence.

Last month, the U.S. State Department and universities around the United States warned college students headed for Mexico for spring break of a surge in drug-related murder and mayhem south of the border.

Flores says the violence isn’t taking place throughout Mexico and instead is isolated to five states and one major city.
