MONTROSE, Colo.—A 14-year-old boy accused of slashing the throat of a Montrose High School student has pleaded guilty under an agreement that calls for seven years in a youth corrections facility.
Michael Yates, who was charged as an adult, entered his plea Wednesday to first-degree attempted murder in the Nov. 11 attack that left a 17-year-old student wounded. A charge of conspiracy to commit first-degree assault was dismissed, as was a pending Mesa County assault case.
The plea agreement calls for an 18-year prison sentence that would be suspended pending Yates’ successful completion of a seven-year stint in a youth corrections facility, which would include a boot camp-type program.
Sentencing is scheduled for May 21.
Also Wednesday, a judge set a May 4 preliminary hearing for 14-year-old Andrew Brown, who faces conspiracy charges in the case.
