BROWNSVILLE, Texas — The leader of a group that bought more than 70 guns from licensed dealers in southern Texas and smuggled them to Mexico has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
U.S. District Judge Hilda Tagle sentenced 25-year-old Emmanuel Ramirez of Brownsville to concurrent sentences of five years for making false statements on firearms records and 10 years for smuggling goods out of the United States. Prosecutors say Ramirez’s ring of more than a dozen gun buyers allowed him to smuggle at least 77 guns into Mexico during a six-month period in 2007-08.
Thirteen others involved received lighter sentences Tuesday.
