THORNTON — A homeless couple living in a tent is now facing a much more dire situation.

The two were badly burned earlier this month when an ember from a cooking pot ignited the dry branches and leaves around their tent.

“The way I had our structure built, it was highly camouflaged because in this world, people don’t accept people who don’t have a home. They can be very cruel, very mean,” Travis Johnson said.

Johnson and his wife of 15 years have been at the University of Colorado Burn Center for more than a month after their tent and nearly everything they own burned.

Johnson says they started living in the tent in Thornton last year after they lost their home and struggled to find work.

Johnson had to have skin grafts on his hands and part of his head and face. He says his wife’s injuries were much more severe and she has many more surgeries ahead of her.

He is still worried about whether his wife will recover and is not sure what he’ll do when he is released from the hospital some time this week.

“I hope that I’ll have the chance to take care of her soon. Other than that, I really don’t know,” Johnson said.

The Red Cross has been called in to help. It will assist Johnson with food and clothing and hopes to help him get counseling.
