Wholesome Milk Products in Northglenn told customers this month that it closed its bottling plant and will no longer produce milk.
“Due to the downturn in our economy, increased costs with all expenses and other issues . . ., we have decided to close our doors right now,” the company said in a March 13 letter.
Wholesome Milk owner Buddy Nichols couldn’t be reached for comment. A call to the company Friday wasn’t returned.
Milk prices have plunged since last summer. Nichols told a local television station in February that he lost 50 cents for every gallon of milk he sold and had to slaughter cows to meet expenses.
“We’re having to go through our herd and decrease numbers in order to generate cash,” Nichols said.
Wholesome was one of about 40 independent companies that produce and bottle milk from their own herds.
