BOULDER — Colorado’s largest blood-collection agency is cutting more than 40 jobs and shutting down two of its seven donor centers in the Denver metro area because of the recession.

Bonfils Blood Center said Monday that demand for blood by the out-of-state hospitals it serves has decreased over the past several months, in part because of a reduction in elective and nonemergency surgeries and cost-cutting measures by health-care facilities.

In response, the center is scaling back donation collections, closing its Lakewood and Aurora donor centers and eliminating 44 jobs, or nearly 10 percent of its workforce.

Bonfils president and chief executive Thomas C. Puckett says blood usage has remained steady in Colorado so donations are still needed. Bonfils supplies more than 200 health-care facilities in the state and elsewhere.
