The University of Kentucky, never shy about flashing greenbacks around its basketball program, appears close to making John Calipari of Memphis the highest-paid college coach in the country.
Memphis boosters met with Calipari on Monday to try to keep him from Kentucky, which was offering a contract that could reach $35 million over eight years, according to , citing unidentified sources.
Kentucky is looking to replace Billy Gillispie, whom it fired Friday after two seasons. Not that it’s worth the paper it’s written on, but Calipari signed a contract extension at Memphis a year ago that pushed his deal through the 2012-13 season, and paid him $2.35 million per year, or about half what Kentucky is apparently willing to pony up.
