ST. LOUIS — Cardinals third baseman Troy Glaus is expected to miss at least two months following a setback in his rehabilitation from arthroscopic shoulder surgery in January.
Glaus originally was expected to miss just a few weeks of the regular season. But the Cardinals said Wednesday that Glaus will be re-evaluated around June 1. David Freese is the top candidate to start at third with Glaus out.
Santana ready for opener
JUPITER, Fla. — Johan Santana pitched three innings in his final tuneup for opening day, allowing two solo homers during the Mets’ 5-2 victory over the Cardinals.
“I’m very pleased with the results in spring training,” said Santana, who struck out two to push his spring total to 17.
The left-hander, who battled elbow stiffness early in camp, proclaimed himself ready to start the season opener Monday at Cincinnati.
Manny behind schedule
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Delayed by a late contract signing and a subsequent hamstring injury, Dodgers left fielder Manny Ramirez said he is running behind schedule this spring.
“Everybody is three weeks ahead of me and I’m trying to catch up, you know?” Ramirez said.
Despite the limited work, manager Joe Torre said he thinks Ramirez is prepared for the start of the season.
“He likes to work more probably than he needs to. You hate to say that about a guy, but he certainly doesn’t slack off,” Torre said.
