LINCOLN, Neb.—Nebraska coach Bo Pelini says his team has made progress through the first half of spring football practices.

Pelini said after Saturday’s practice in the Hawks Championship Center that he would like to see more depth develop in a number of areas but that the team as a whole is better than it was seven practices ago.

Pelini said he’s pleased with the development of the free safety position. He said P.J. Smith has been especially impressive this spring.

Three players missed all or part of the practice. Receiver Chris Brooks aggravated a ligament injury in his left foot and was wearing a walking boot. Linebacker Blake Lawrence also was in a walking boot with an undisclosed foot injury. Running back Roy Helu Jr. was limited because of a sore hamstring.
