DURANGO, Colo.—Bail has been set at $10,000 for a Bayfield woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a 90-year-old man for whom she had been caring.
Fifty-eight-year-old Earlene Bara surrendered to authorities Monday on an arrest warrant from the La Plata County sheriff’s office. Investigator James Locke says she’s accused of forging numerous checks worth $18,420 and cashing them.
Locke says Bara had been helping care for Charles Blair of Durango for about 18 months before he died Dec. 19. Part of that care included helping Blair pay his bills from a checkbook.
Blair’s son, Robert, allegedly found a discrepancy while reconciling a checking account and notified authorities.
The woman’s husband, Turhan Bara, told The Durango Herald his wife is innocent.
