The Society of Professional Journalists gave its top award for investigative journalism Monday to “The Battle Within,” a Denver Post series that revealed how frequently the Army redeploys physically and mentally injured soldiers.
The three-part series by Erin Emery and David Olinger was published in August.
The judges called the series one “all Americans would rightfully feel a sense of outrage about when reading.”
Olinger acknowledged that the work could not have been done without “the soldiers and family members who opened their hearts and handed over their medical records.”
Emery, now working in the communications department at Memorial Health System in Colorado Springs, said she hopes the stories have helped soldiers and their families.
Post editor Greg Moore said the series “exposed a serious issue related to the deployment of soldiers and what was being done to keep them in the field.”
