Denver city and tourism officials on Tuesday kicked off a plan to boost tourism by promoting packages for sporting events, theme parks and other city attractions built around a price point of $52.80 and lower. The program to increase leisure travel was created by Visit Denver, the city’s convention and visitors bureau. Tourism is the state’s second-largest industry. The metro area accounts for 65,000 jobs and $2.9 billion in annual revenue.
“The hospitality industry is facing very hard times,” said Mayor John Hickenlooper, who helped unveil the local tourism-stimulus plan. “We recognize that people are staying closer to home.”
Included in the promotion are deals such as hotels offering one night at regular price and a second night for $52.80; a four-ticket pack for select Colorado Rockies games that includes Cokes, hot dogs, a parking pass and a game program for $49; or two full-day bicycle rentals for $52.80 with free drop-off and pickup service from Classic Cruisers Bike Rentals & Tours.
Hickenlooper said the program provides opportunities for people to find less-expensive recreation options. The $2 million tourism campaign features more than 100 packages, and more will be coming on line in the near future, tourism officials said. Elizabeth Aguilera, The Denver Post
