A legislative committee Tuesday approved bills that could make smokes and Cokes more expensive for Coloradans.

The House Finance Committee approved House Bills 1342 and 1355, which, respectively, would remove sales-tax exemptions on cigarettes and on products purchased from vending machines. The bills, which now go to the House Appropriations Committee, each passed on 6-5 party-line votes, with Democrats in favor.

Removal of the sales-tax exemptions would generate about $37 million.
