Sales data from homebuilders and finishing contractors indicates that people may be fixing what they don’t like about their homes instead of buying a new house.

Sales of new homes nationwide were down 5 percent last year, compared with 2007. Meanwhile, finishing contractors saw a 2 percent increase during the same period.

A similar trend is occurring in the auto industry, where repair shops saw 2 percent growth compared with a nearly 13 percent decline for new-car dealerships.
