Getting your player ready...

“D” will get much needed rest.

“You insult Broncos fans by saying we want a quarterback to forget about Jay Cutler and become a scoring machine for entertainment purposes. I understand the importance of championships being won with defense first. Defense is entertaining. Have you ever listened to a crowd erupt when the defense gets a sack or creates a turnover? Why would Broncos fans be any different? The only reason you don’t hear that at Mile High is because the Denver defense hasn’t given the fans much to cheer about.”

Sean, Castle Pines North

Kiz: Coach Josh McDaniels made his reputation and landed a job with the Broncos based on offensive genius. Did you really think he was going to think defense, defense, defense in the NFL draft? Long before Mel Kiper and self-professed draftniks caught a hint, I gave you a heads-up the Broncos were in love with Georgia running back Know- shon Moreno. Getting him not only takes pressure off quarterback Kyle Orton, it could keep the Denver defense on the sideline longer. And that’s a good thing.

Bowlen wants to win NOW.

“Broncos fans need to get over the Cutler fiasco, and particularly need to get over the idea their team has any hope of being relevant for some time. Given the gaping holes on the Broncos, the Cutler trade may have been the best way to start the rebuilding process. Being competitive in a parity-driven NFL is not much of an achievement. Living up to the lofty goals of being a contender is a far different matter. As the recent Mike Shanahan years have shown, success won’t come from signing other teams’ refuse. The Orange Brigade better realize that suffering through a couple years of bottom- dwelling while building for long- term competitiveness is better than years of 9-7 with no hope of a championship.”

Neil, Denver

Kiz: There were 65 candles on Pat Bowlen’s birthday cake in February. And how much do you think the football crises of the past 100 days have aged him? While Bowlen invested heavily in the future by hiring McDaniels, the young coach won’t be allowed to dawdle installing some five-year plan for success with this boss.

Bowlen had hand in trade.

“The Broncos had a great quarterback in Cutler, for whom we had hopes and affection. Coach Josh McDaniels spit in the face of all Denver fans by his incompetent throwing away of Cutler. Everyone I talk with is plenty angry. We feel revulsion at what has been done to us.”

Karl, Centennial

Kiz: Has any Broncos coach ever been booed the very first time he stepped on the field at his home stadium? From all the lingering fan ire, it sounds like Kid McD has a chance to make history. But if you’re still mad about Cutler in September, trust me on this: If any NFL team trades the face of the franchise, it must be the owner’s call.

Who’s on first?

“Kiszla, you seem to be a bright guy, so let me run this by you. Who’s the starting center fielder for the Rockies? Is it Ryan Spilborghs or Dexter Fowler? Who’s the starting left fielder? Is it Spilborghs, Seth Smith or Ian Stewart? Who’s the starting third baseman? Garrett Atkins or Stewart? Is Jeff Baker an infielder or outfielder? What about Stewart? Who’s the backup first baseman? Atkins? So if Todd Helton gets yanked from first for a sore bum, they have to move Atkins from third to first, Stewart from left to third, Spilborghs from center to left and bring in Fowler to play center. I got that right? Manager Clint Hurdle needs a mental evaluation.”

Joe, Colorado Springs

Kiz: If the losses keep mounting, the Rockies lineup will sound more and more like an Abbott and Costello routine. Who’s on first? I don’t know. Or give a darn. But if Hurdle keeps losing, will he be replaced as manager by Jim Tracy or Don Baylor? Naturally.

Wrong signals from Avs

And today’s parting shot wonders if there was a method to the Avalanche’s madness to broadcast a last-place team’s games on a radio station you have trouble hearing beyond the Pepsi Center parking lot.

“I heard the Avalanche’s out-of-touch, delusional, head-in-the-sand management has finally done something to improve the pathetic radio signal for their games. The solution will be to put play-by-play man Norm Jones on the roof of the Pepsi Center with a megaphone in order to expand the listening radius.” Tom, Arvada
