SIDNEY, Neb.—Authorities have identified the man killed in a fiery crash that closed part of Interstate 80 in western Nebraska for more than seven hours.

He’s 56-year-old Wayne Whallon of Clay City, Ind.

The Nebraska State Patrol said Whallon lost control of his westbound pickup when a tire blew on Thursday morning and collided with an oncoming tanker. The tanker, which was hauling hydrocarbon liquids used in insulation, struck a semitrailer and caught fire.

Sidney fire chief Keith Stone said the blaze sparked a grass fire that consumed 80 to 100 acres.

Two others were hurt in the crash, but they were released after treatment at a local hospital.

A 10-mile stretch of Interstate 80 in the Sidney area was closed for much of the day following the crash.
