Elin Palmer has graced DeVotchKa, Munly’s Lee Lewis Harlots, Crooked Fingers and even M. Ward with her instrumental and vocal talents, but the Swedish songwriter plans to step out on her own tonight at the Hi-Dive for the release of her video, “Balloons,” directed by John Rumley of Slim Cessna’s Auto Club. Also expect previews of her forthcoming solo album, recorded with Denver legend Bob Ferbrache. With Ian Cooke Band, Houses. $8. hi-dive.com

Mr. Lif’s “I Heard it Today” doesn’t take any major detours from his political subject matter (police brutality, cultural imperialism, etc.), but the Boston MC also remembers to provide the headstrong flows and beats to back them up. Leaving longtime label Def Jux clearly hasn’t hampered his ability to craft a hard-hitting album. Saturday at the Marquis Theater with Grieves, Willie Evans Jr., Sandpeople and DopeSex. $12. The Faint and Ladytron are no-brainers as joint headliners: Both exude a sexy, synth-rock cool that’s at once dystopian and irresistibly fun on the dance floor. Get ready to shake your rusty robot parts when they play the Ogden Theater on Tuesday with Crocodiles. $25.50- $30. Ticketmaster
