Beginning today, United Airlines will charge an additional $5 for bags checked at the airport, bringing the cost to $20 for the first bag and $30 for the second bag.
Those who check their bags online will pay $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second. United officials said the bag fees remain at the old level for tickets purchased before today for travel at any time and the same for tickets bought today for travel before June 10.
US Airways announced similar pricing for flights booked on or after April 23 for travel after July 9.
The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that the airline industry collected more than $1 billion in baggage fees last year, with United receiving $133 million.
