AURORA, Colo.—A man accused of fatally shooting a code enforcement officer in the Denver suburb of Aurora has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

Twenty-three-year-old Harry Williams entered his plea Thursday in Adams County District Court. His trial is set to begin Oct. 19.

Rodney Morales was shot Nov. 13 while conducting a routine inspection at an apartment complex. He died shortly after being taken to a hospital.

Police launched a massive search but didn’t find the shooter. They identified Williams as a suspect the next day and tracked him to his sister’s northeast Denver home, where he surrendered after a standoff.

Police testified at a hearing last month that Morales believed there might have been a “hit” out against him.

Williams’ attorney said there’s no evidence Williams knew Morales or that he lived at the complex where Morales was shot.
