LAKEWOOD, Colo.—Thompson Valley’s girls set a state record Thursday in the Class 4A 3200-meter relay final, winning the state championship in 9:00.07 at Jefferson County Stadium.
Thompson Valley, from Loveland, beat the record Aurora’s Smoky Hill set in 2003 with a time of 9:01.83.
Alamosa finished a distant second, running in 9:30.41, and Mullen was third with a time of 9:37.66.
On the boys’ side, Wheat Ridge won the 3200-meter relay to claim the state crown, finishing in 7:51.91. Windsor was second with a time of 7:56.99, and Falcon was third, 7:57.61.
The 3,200-meter relay was the only championship running event contested Thursday in Class 4A. All other running events served as qualifiers for the finals on Friday and Saturday.
Thursday’s other finals included two girls’ and three boys’ field events.
Mountain View’s Amy Medina won the girls’ triple jump with a distance of 38 feet, and Annie Kunz of Wheat Ridge leaped 5 foot, 5 inches to win the high jump title.
Lewis-Palmer’s Andrew Schomburg won the triple jump, hitting a mark of 46 feet, 1/4-inch. Aldric Brown of Castle View sprung to a height of 6 foot, 7 inches to claim the state championship in the high jump, and Ken Harriman of Pueblo South tossed the shot put 53 feet, 4-1/2 inches to win that event.
The Lewis-Palmer boys led team competition after four finals events with 19 points. D’Evelyn and Alamosa were tied with 12 points, while Pueblo South, Wheat Ridge and Castle View had 10 apiece.
After the first three girls finals, Wheat Ridge led the team rankings with 19 points. Mountain View was in second-place with 17 points, Mullen had 13, Rock Canyon had 12 and Lewis-Palmer rounded out the top five with 11 points.
The state meet continues Friday and Saturday with action in Class 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A at Jefferson County Stadium.
