A suspected burglar was shot to death this morning after an encounter with police inside a Colorado Springs home, but authorities are saying a little about the circumstances and whether the man had a gun.
“That’s something at this point we’re not talking about,” said Lt. David Whitlock, a spokesman for the department. “That’s part of the investigation that’s yet to be determined.”
Police aren’t releasing the names of the dead man, an accused accomplice who ran from the home or the name of the officer involved in the shooting.
Police were called when a family in the 8200 block of Candon Drive came home to find their garage door open at 11:20 a.m.
The chain of events began before that, however. Their car was broken into at another location and their garage door opener was taken, police said.
When officers arrived and went into the home they found two men in the living room and “shots were fired,” according to a written police statement.
One man was found dead from a gunshot inside the family’s home, police said.
The second man was Tasered and arrested outside the home, police said. He was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center without bond.
The officer who fired the shot was put on paid leave for the duration of the investigation, which is standard procedure, according to the police statement.
