Monument Roofing Systems began construction Monday on a $130,000 energy-efficient roof it is donating to Mi Casa Resource Center.

The effort marks the company’s expansion into Colorado. “Being a good corporate neighbor is a fundamental aspect of Monument’s business strategy,” said Charles R. Smith, founder of Texas-based Monument Constructors Inc., the parent company of Monument Roofing Systems. “When you put roofs up, you are putting roofs over people, and what Monument is trying to do is immediately put down roots in the Denver community and connect with the people here.”

Mi Casa was not able to afford the new roof, and staff and board members of the nonprofit organization would regularly deal with leaks and falling tiles in the Community Center.

Graduates of Mi Casa’s Construction & Energy Pre-Apprenticeship course will work alongside the professional Monument roofers.

In the fall, Mi Casa will add solar panels to the roof, and career-program participants will help with that project.

“This new energy-efficient roof reflects Mi Casa’s commitment — both in our own facility and as an organization that trains people to work in the renewable-energy industries — to responsible environmental stewardship,” said Christine Mar quez-Hudson, chief executive and executive director of Mi Casa.
