Re: The “dirty dozen”

Nutrition columnist Shirley Perryman tells us: “According to research by the Environmental Working Group, or EWG, the 12 fruits and vegetables containing the highest level of pesticides are apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, imported grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach and strawberries. Consider organic when purchasing any of these.”

Re: Mint

I hope many readers were inspired to grow their own mint. We will have lots of fabulous recipes for them come June 25 — in our new cookbook from the Junior League of Denver, “Colorado Classique.”

Here’s a sneak-peek recipe from the new book.

Vietnamese Chimichurri

To serve on steak, lamb, chicken, tuna, or even corn on the cob.

Ingredients

1     tablespoon Thai fish sauce

1     teaspoon cracked black pepper

1     teaspoon sugar

1/2   jalapeño pepper, chopped

2     tablespoons fresh lime juice

2     teaspoons chopped garlic

2     medium shallots, chopped

1/2   cup chopped mint or more to taste

1/2   cup chopped fresh cilantro

      Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Puree fish sauce, black pepper, sugar, jalapeño, lime juice, garlic and shallots in a blender or food processor. Add mint and cilantro and pulse until finely chopped. Season with salt and pepper.
