Xcel Energy on Tuesday announced the commercial operation of two new natural-gas-fired power-generating units at its Fort St. Vrain plant near Platteville.

The units will provide about 270 megawatts of electricity, or enough to power more than 200,000 homes in Colorado. They were installed as part of a resource plan approved in 2003.

As peaking units, they will operate only during periods of unusually high demand. They also will provide backup generation for existing plants.
