The 10th annual Veterans Memorial Day Tribute will be at 11:30 a.m. at the Colorado Veterans Monument across Lincoln Street from the State Capitol, immediately following the annual Memorial Day Parade. The ceremony culminates with the Reading of the Names as the Navy Bell is tolled. The guest speaker is Pulitzer Prize winning Denver journalist Jim Sheeler who wrote, “Final Salute: A Story of Unfinished Lives.” Info: 303-912-9980.
The Wounded Warrior Project kicks off with the Colorado Soldier Ride. This first-time event is intended to provide rehabilitative cycling opportunities for Denver area and Rocky Mountain wounded soldiers as well as promote awareness of the Wounded Warrior Project. The 20-mile bicycle ride begins at 8 a.m., and start and finish is at the Vietnam Memorial at the State Capital. A walk of the same course is at 9:30 a.m. The public can show support by cycling with the wounded warriors for a $50 donation and/or participating in the walk for a $25 donation. There will be an F-16 flyover at 10 a.m. at Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary, Cemetery and Arboretum, 777 W. 29th Ave., Wheat Ridge. Following the flyover, a parade of bagpipers will march along the flag-lined esplanade to the historic Tower of Memories, where tribute remarks will be shared by Artie Guerrero, veteran and board member of Project Sanctuary. A dove release and a patriotic concert by the Denver Municipal Band Brass and Percussion Ensemble will conclude the day’s events as attendees are treated to an ice cream social. The 2009 Denver Memorial Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. at W. Colfax Ave. and Bannock St., proceeds across to 14th St., turns right onto Court Pl., turns left onto 15th St., turns right onto Welton St., turns onto 17th St., turns right onto 17th St., turns right onto Broadway, proceeds south on Broadway to the 1400 block of Broadway past the reviewing stand. The parade then continues south to W. 13th Ave. and then west on W. 13th Ave. to disband. Marshalling begins at 9 a.m. A mayoral proclamation will be read by Denver Auditor Dennis Gallagher at 10 a.m. at the parade review stand, between Colfax Ave. and 14th Ave. on Broadway. Andrew Grieb, a leader with the Denver United Veterans council is this year’s parade chairman. Military personnel, veterans and organizations will march in the parade.
RTD service on several bus routes will be detoured during the parade, which is expected to last approximately two hours. The following RTD routes will be detoured north- and south-bound: 0, 7, 8 and 12. These routes will be affected by delays throughout the parade. Olinger Crown Hill Mortuary, Cemetery and Arboretum, 7777 W. 29th Ave., is having a bagpiper performance by Michael Lancaster at noon at the Tower of Memories. A Memorial Day service will be at 6 p.m. at the Pavilion of Reflection. An American Flag Sky Diving Demonstration will be at 6:45 p.m. The Queen City Jazz Band will give a concert at 7 p.m. at the Pavilion of Reflections. A fireworks.laser show will be at 8 p.m.

The Aurora Veterans’ Affairs Commission is having a Memorial Day Ceremony at 11:45 a.m. at the Aurora Municipal Center, 15151 E. Alameda Ave. at the east flagpoles. There will be a raising of the POW/MIA flag, and words from the Veterans’ Affairs Commissioners and other guests. The ceremony will include a flyover from the 140th Wing Colorado Air National Guard at 12:15 p.m.
Broomfield Veterans Museum is having a Memorial Day Picnic from 1 to 4 p.m. at the main shelter at the Broomfield County Commons, 13200 Sheridan Blvd. There will be speakers and entertainment, and food and drink for sale buy the Broomfield Lions Club. The Police Honor Guard will present the colors and Broomfield Mayorr Pat Quinn will welcome attendees. Take a blanket or chairs.
The Commerce City Memorial Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. at 64th Avenue and Olive Street and travels west to Kearney St., south to 62nd Avenue, then west to Parkway Drive. It ends in front of the veteran’s memorial at the Commerce City Recreation Center. The Grand Marshal is Antonio Bertapelle, who served in the military for more than 20 years. The Town of Dillon is hosting its annual Memorial Day Service at the Dillon Cemetery, on Highway 6 between Swan Mountain Road and the Town of Dillon at 10 a.m. The service includes, Summit County Boy Scouts Color Guard, music, various community speakers, a community sharing session (open mic opportunity for guests to share experiences and memories of lost loved ones Info: Contact the Town of Dillon at 970-468-2403.
The Nisei Veteran’s Heritage Foundation and the Mile-Hi Japanese American Citizens League are hosting the 63rd annual Memorial Day Service, commemorating the 442nd Infantry, formerly the 442nd Regimental Combat Team of the US Army, at 11 a.m. at the Nisei Monument in Block 35 at Fairmont Cemetery, 430 S. Quebec St. The Fairmount Heritage Foundation will be collecting donations for the Denver Veterans Hospital. Needed items include: new men’s and women’s underwear in all sizes; new men’s and women’s socks in all sizes; new or gently used ball caps; toiletries such as soap, conditioner, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, sunscreen and lip balm; and sundries such as water bottles, paperback books, puzzle books and yarn.
Fort Logan National Cemetery, 3698 Sheridan Blvd., is having a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Elected officials, representatives from the military services, veterans and their families will participate in the event. The activities are coordinated by the Associated Veterans of Colorado and include; a traditional wreath laying; comments by Senator Michael Bennet; Memorial Day address by Lynette Roff, Director, Eastern Colorado Health Care System, and a flyover by 140th Wing Colorado Air National Guard.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4666 and the American Legion George C. Evans Post 103 are hosting a Memorial Day ceremony at 8 a.m. at Veterans Circle in the Littleton Cemetery, 6155 S. Prince St. There will also be a ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Littleton World War II Memorial in Ketring Park, 6028 S. Gallup St. The El Jebel Pipe Band will perform “Amazing Grace,” and there will be a 21-gun salute by the All Veterans Honor Guard. Steve Woodworth will perform “Taps,” and there will be a bird release by White Birds Unlimited.
The veterans of the 10th Mountain Division of World War II will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at the 10th Mountain Division Memorial Monument at Tennessee Pass.
Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary and Cemetery, 6601 S. Colorado Blvd., is hosting a Veteran Salute Ceremony at 11:30 a.m., Monday, May 25. A tribute to pets will be at 10 a.m. at the Pavilion of Reflection, as this is often the first loss a child will face. A brief grief workshop and a memorial quilt signing will take place, with proceeds benefiting the MAX Fund, an animal rescue shelter and animal health organization.
