Cocoa is a 3-year-old Labradoodle, but to 12-year-old Skyler Davis, he is so much more.
“Cocoa is a magical dog in Skyler’s life. He would be an amazing dog if he was just a pet, but he plays an important role in Skyler’s medical health,” said Susanne Davis of Lafayette, Skyler’s mother.
Cocoa is a service dog trained to alert if Skyler is going to have a seizure or if his blood sugar gets too low.
“He’s like my best friend,” Skyler said.
They are friends who are literally always together. But in preparation for an upcoming trip that would require them to be apart for a few hours, Cocoa was taken across town to grandpa’s house to see how he’d do.
“So we were about to go pick up Cocoa and the phone rang and his father said we let him out to go in the backyard for a minute and he jumped the fence and took off,” Davis said.
Cocoa was spotted a few times after he took off. A driver saw a dog that looked like Cocoa around 6 p.m. on Tuesday night near E-470 and York. Wednesday morning he was apparently spotted in a field just a few miles from their home. Wednesday afternoon, Skyler’s dad spotted, but couldn’t catch Cocoa near 144th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard in Broomfield.
“Cocoa could see that was the direction we lived in and was trying to come find us,” Davis said.
This morning, Skyler’s father found Cocoa in the backyard of a woman’s house in the area where the dog had been spotted.
Cocoa and Skyler have been reunited and Cocoa, who was not injured, is resting at home.
