Buy-one-get-one grave sites might not have the same Memorial Day bargain buzz as, say, 2-for-1 on hot dogs.

But holiday sales are the American way, as customary as placing flowers for the dearly departed. So a cemetery in Delta is offering underground rooms on sale, half-price when you buy two, through next week.

Mesa View Cemetery, just northeast of Delta on the Western Slope, is selling a single grave site for $500 and setting aside a second plot for free. Owners Alice and Ray Penick wanted to highlight a new area of the cemetery offering space for upright headstones instead of just flat markers.

“We’ve had a couple of people who have gone ahead and done it,” Alice Penick said. “It’s not something people are real anxious to do, but it has attracted some attention.”

For weekend drivers wanting a tour from the Front Range to the Western Slope, Mesa View emphasizes that grave prices “are much better than Denver prices.”

And that’s a stone-cold fact. Crown Hill in Wheat Ridge asks $3,995 for a grave site at a plot for upright headstones.

But metro cemeteries are not conceding the holiday bargain field to outstate colleagues. Crown Hill has Memorial Day special coupons worth $250 off, as well as discounts on markers, vaults and the space itself. And don’t forget 2.9 percent financing on funeral services — if you set up an auto-payment plan.

Act now. The end of May is the, um, deadline.
