OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The University of Denver women’s golf team improved 10 shots from Thursday and finished in fifth place as the NCAA women’s championship wrapped up Friday at Caves Valley Golf Club.

Arizona State shot a 3-over-par 291 to leapfrog third-round leader Southern California and take the team title, its seventh, at 30-over 1,182. UCLA was second (1,190), and USC was third (1,191). DU finished at 1,206.

Purdue’s Maria Hernandez shot a 1-under 71 and overtook the leader at the start of the day, USC freshman Jennifer Song, who double-bogeyed the last hole, to win the individual title with a 1-over 289. DU’s Stephanie Sherlock shot a 75 and finished in a tie for 11th at 9-over, eight strokes behind Hernandez. Dawn Shockley also shot a 75 on Friday and was two strokes behind Sherlock in a tie for 21st. Katie Kempter tied for 39th place with a 304 total.
