Boulder is outfitting the five municipal pools with drains to meet new federal safety requirements, said Paul Bousquet, spokesman for the parks and recreation department.
Scott Carpenter and Spruce pools have the new drains, and all of the indoor pools should be finished by the end of the summer.
Scott Carpenter opened over the weekend, and Spruce is scheduled to open Saturday.
Recreation officials had to custom order the new drains, and there was a shortage of the gates designed to prevent body parts, hair and jewelry from getting trapped, Bousquet said. The cost of the drains and installation is estimated at $7,000 to $9,000.
