DENVER—Services were set for Saturday in California for Erik Brandon Bluemel, an assistant professor of law at the University of Denver who died after a bicycle crash. He was 32.
University officials say Bluemel died May 6, a day after the crash. Police say Bluemel was on a bike path and no other vehicles were involved. The accident is under investigation.
The Denver coroner’s office said an autopsy was done but the cause and manner of haven’t been determined.
Bluemel joined DU’s Sturm College of Law in August. He taught administrative, environmental and indigenous peoples’ law.
“We have all lost a wonderful colleague, teacher and friend,” said Jose “Beto” Juarez Jr., dean of the law college.
Bluemel’s research interests included climate governance, environmental rights and international administrative law, university spokesman Chase Squires said.
Previously, he served as a clerk for U.S. District Judge Harold Barefoot Sanders in Texas and 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Kermit Bye of Fargo, N.D.
He was a teaching fellow and staff attorney at the Institute for Public Representation at Georgetown University.
Bluemel was born March 2, 1977 in Arcadia, Calif.
Survivors include his parents, Thomas Burton Bluemel and Lori Lee Bluemel, a sister, Cassondra Lee Bluemel, his grandparents, Orville and Donna La Venture and Thomas Bluemel, and a great-grandmother, Treva Bonser.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Arcadia Presbyterian Church in Arcadia, Calif.
