A standoff ended peacefully this afternoon in Centennial when a man surrendered to SWAT officers.
SWAT officers had surrounded a house after a report of shots being fired. Local schools held students from that neighborhood to keep them away from the scene, officials and witnesses said.
The incident began about 11:13 a.m. when Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department got a report of shots being fired in the 20300 block of East Powers Place Road.
When police arrived, an 18-year-old man told police that at least two shots had been fired at him by another 18-year-old and that one shot had hit his vehicle.
A perimeter was established and unsuccessful attempts were made to contact anyone inside the house. After an arrest warrant was obtained, the SWAT officers were joined by the Aurora Police Department Bear armored vehicle.
Another phone call was made to the house and this time the man inside answered and agreed to surrender.
The man, identified as Franklin Brandon, faces a charge of criminal attempt murder in the first degree, police said.
Timberline Elementary School, Thunder Ridge Middle School and Eaglecrest High School were notified at about 1 p.m. that an incident possibly involving shots fired had taken place several blocks from Timberline, said Cherry Creek School District spokeswoman Tustin Amole.
Children not heading home in the vicinity of the SWAT operation were released after school as usual, she said.
